BROOKS WILLIAMS

“Pure talent, hard work and relentless touring,” observes Blues In Britain, “has brought him [Williams] to the pinnacle of his career.” He has recorded a mind-blowing total of thirty-five albums (on labels like Signature Sounds and Green Linnet) and performed in thousands of bars, clubs, festivals and arts centres (like Cropredy, Philadelphia, The Bluebird, Glastonbury, and Cambridge). Statesboro, Georgia by birth, Cambridge UK by choice, Brooks Williams is the ultimate journeyman-troubadour.

Over a nearly 40-year career he has honed his craft one stage at a time. One night at a time. And built his following one fan at a time. Leaving Georgia at 18, he made Boston his home at the height of that city’s burgeoning singer-songwriter scene, which turned out to be the ultimate proving ground. From there he signed record deals, recorded, toured, until eventually resettling to the UK, where he has continued to tour and record. His is the musician’s life.

Brooks Williams’ guitar playing sounds like a band. Audience members are often heard saying, “that can’t possibly be one guitar playing all those notes.” There’s the bass. There’s the rhythm. Here comes the solo. It’s free-flowing. Like water. Like air. Perhaps that’s why he is listed as one of the “Top 100 Acoustic Guitarists.”

His singing sounds instantly familiar with a tone that melts like chocolate. It’s a voice that can wrap itself around a lyric with a purr or a growl, depending on the song. His is a voice that wants the listener to know what’s going on.

His songs deeply respect country, blues and acoustic traditions while also sounding contemporary and newly born. Rooted yet flying free. A storyteller at heart, his songs show rather than tell. The personal reflects the universal, the universal reflects the personal with dashboard confessionals and outright bangers.

His performances are effortless, conversational, and show, according to Fatea, “the greatest level of true expertise.” He can shift gears in a flash with wealth of anecdotes, a lifetime of songs, and a million gigs worth of riffs. Brooks Williams’ solo acoustic shows a wonder to behold. No two are exactly the same.
