PRODIGAL GUITAR RETURNS!
I switched on my phone as our plane touched down at Heathrow. The iTag ping alerted me to the fact that, and I quote, ‘Your guitar is no longer with you. It was last seen at JFK Airport in New York City.’ Later this was all confirmed, but at the time I thought it was a joke. Why? Because when we arrived at JFK I did just as instructed. I left the guitar in the exact specific place where it would be hand-collected and lovingly delivered to the plane on a cushion of rose petals and jasmine. Apparently, my guitar had other ideas. It wasn't ready to leave New York City. There was more nightlife it wanted to experience. Nightlife of a less-folkie variety, shall we say. So off it went. Uber to Manhattan. Then Harlem. And, finally, in the wee hours of the morning, the Village. I can see it now on my credit card statement. Like a trail of tears I can trace every step of that sordid evening. There are things I just don't want to know about that night. It doesn't bear asking, Jo said. Let it go, she continued, while soothing my furrowed brow. Two days later my guitar came crashing through the front door at home. It reeked of cigarettes and god knows what. Stickers and tags were attached helter-skelter to the outside. Scribbled on the back a phone number and a message: 'That was fun, let's do it again sometime. Call me.' We'd laugh if it weren't for crying.
